Syrian official: Lebanon cannot be governed except by consensus
June 9, 2009

“Lebanon cannot be governed except by consensus,” a Syrian source told As-Safir daily on Tuesday, reiterating Damascus’ stance on the issue, “regardless of how Syria interprets the 2009 Lebanese parliamentary election results.”

The source refrained from commenting on the election results, saying that they fall within Lebanese domestic affairs and assured that Syria did not intervene in the elections, “unlike other countries.”

As-Safir also reported that another Syrian source had previously stated that Riyadh hinted to Damascus its acceptance of consensus within the new Lebanese cabinet. The issue was discussed during the Syrian-Saudi dialogue, which was initiated after the Kuwaiti Summit that was held in January 2009.
