US Embassy denies fabricated story in al-Akhbar
February 26, 2009

The US Embassy in Lebanon issued a statement on Thursday that read, an al-Akhbar story published Wednesday entitled “Cheney’s Assistant to Al-Akhbar: Our Disappointment in the Cedar Revolution is Big” was a complete fabrication.

The statement read that the article supposedly conveyed comments by John Hannah, who previously served as Assistant for National Security Affairs to former US Vice President Cheney, made to an al-Akhbar reporter in Jordan recently.

“This article is entirely fabricated.  John Hannah was never interviewed by al-Akhbar.  He has not traveled to Jordan recently.  The remarks attributed to him, to former Vice President Cheney and others are false,” the statement read.

The embassy called on the paper to issue a retraction of the fabricated story.

Earlier on Thursday, NOW Lebanon spoke to Hannah, who firmly denied having made any such statements.
