Hale conveys US offer of Cobra helicopters
September 5, 2008

During his latest visit to Beirut, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Asia and the Near East David Hale informed Lebanon of his country’s intention to provide the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) with military aid, sources told NOW Lebanon on Thursday.

This aid would include equipping the LAF with fighter helicopters, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Hale submitted a list of US-made helicopters, at the top of which came the AH-1 COBRA fighter helicopter, to the Lebanese Ministry of Defense.

The list outlined the US Defense Department’s aid Lebanon as part of the plan aimed at consolidating the capacities of the Lebanese army to enable the LAF to preserve security, confront challenges and consolidate civil peace in Lebanon.

The sources did not rule out that the shooting of a military helicopter in the southern Lebanese village of Soujoud by Hezbollah gunmen may have been a preemptive message to internal and foreign parties.

According to such a message, any military aid provided to Lebanon should not alter the current field reality, and Hezbollah should not allow the disruption of the current balance of forces, which grants it military supremacy in Lebanon.

While a Hezbollah fighter has been reported as handed over to judicial authorities for the gunning, which killed Captain Samer Hanna, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Thursday defended the shooting as a painful mistake, but nothing more.

Hale’s statement comes after his visit to Lebanon in late August, during which he met with Lebanese leaders, including President Michel Sleiman and Speaker Nabih Berri.

It will a good step forward to equip the lebanese army with such advanced helicopters, andbetter yet, it is time for the U.S. to provide the lebanese air force with fighter/bomber jets to realy improve the capabilities of the air force and boost the army's morale after so many blows directed against them this year. We have the finest officers and enlisyed men in the air force who lack only the equipment and support, and who were smart enough, when permitted, and converted a 40 year old helicopter into a bomber carrying 250 and 400kg jet fighter bombs, and use them with extreme precision and verry high risks to their lives, to finish the three month battle in nahr el bared camp against al-quaeda terrorists supported by the syrians, in less than ten days. The cold blood execution of the gazelle helicopter pilot was a political message to the army directly, and the hardest, just before the government was apointing the new army comander in cheif, who is from a village in the south of leba

Very interesting... this changes eveything! I am always skeptical of a group like Hizballah saying that "they made a mistake". Every move I've seen from them has been highly coordinated and their chain of command is second to none. Nice to see that people in the press have been doing their jobs and getting the real news out. Well done NowLebanon.

AH-1 Cobras are a 1960s technology used by the US in the Vietnam war. They will not add any significant capacity to our army. While we appreciate the help, how about some F16 or at least some Apaches which are much more effective as attack helicopters?

This should help clarify why Hizbullah "accidentaly" shot down an LAF helicopter hours after Hale's visit and decided to interrogate its crew. If this is not a clear message to the Lebanese Army command to keep it in check- as were the events of Mar Mkhail- then I do not know what is. It is of course also a message to the foreign powers that are arming the Lebanese Army. Its a shame that our army command is terrorized to the point it cannot even publically identify, let alone punish, those attacking it. Syria and Iran's allies are back to their old blackmailing tactics as Sarko embrasses Assad back into the fold of civilized nation.
