A critique of pure resistance
NOW Staff , June 25, 2008

Recent weeks have seen Hezbollah's leadership grow more and more esoteric and convoluted in their definitions of what precisely constitutes the Resistance, and when exactly that Resistance has completed its task.

On May 25, Hassan Nasrallah announced that the Resistance, once trumpeted as a national Lebanese institution, would now be defined as the few, the proud, the Hezbollah rank-and-file. The rest of Lebanon is simply not enlightened enough to know when or from whom they need the Resistance’s protection. Certainly we never would have guessed that the people of west Beirut, Aley, the Bekaa or Tripoli needed resisting; the Resistance moves in mysterious ways.

Then, on June 19, MP Hassan Fadlallah cleverly identified attempts to liberate the Shebaa Farms, the Resistance's solemn quest of these past eight years, without massive bloodshed as in fact a dastardly betrayal of the Resistance and its principles. We wouldn’t want to steal their thunder, of course, but we wonder if this isn’t simply displaced heartache over Bashar al-Assad’s flirtations with the Zionists. Men can be so cruel.

But perhaps most alarming was Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem's ruminations this past week on what the Resistance really is. No longer just a "military reaction to occupation," now "the Resistance is a vision and a methodology to follow," apparently, a contrarian Tao, an organizing principle of Lebanese life. Resistance, as its own raison d’être; these guys must be hell to order a pizza with.

Back in reality, the picture is a bit clearer, if not quite as sophisticated. Hezbollah's resistance credibility is simply slipping away at an ever accelerating rate, and they know it. Even back in 2000, the Shebaa Farms were a straw grasped in the wake of the Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon. Now, they face losing even that excuse to hold on to their weapons. And after the pitched battles of this past May, the Lebanese people have a perfect understanding of just what those weapons would be used for without the nasty Israelis to kick around anymore.

The signs are already evident that Hezbollah's public support is constricting. The Sunnis, Druze and Christians who gave them grudging admiration for their ability to stand up to the Israeli juggernaut have been betrayed. The Shia of the South and southern suburbs of Beirut have little stomach for any more deadly adventures south of the border, although it remains to be seen if this will be reflected in the polls.

Hezbollah's attempt to redefine "resistance" as whatever they say it is may fool some, but increasingly it's not fooling many. Lebanese poets and philosophers are sadly in short supply these days; most people just want to make a decent living and watch their sons and daughters grow up in a peaceful and free society. They want the life that resistance to occupation was supposed to deliver, not weapons as ends in themselves.

The veil has fallen. Hezbollah are nothing but a terrorist group that have used their weapons against the Lebanese people eventhough they were under no military threat. If Syria signs peace with Israel and they get the Shebaa farms, will hezbollah claim them from Syria? I very much doubt so. If Syria keeps the Shebaa farms, will hezbollah attack Syria? Again no! Stop the hypocrisy; hezbollah are nto resisting Israel, they are looking to dominate Lebanon and nothing else. And the other retards ,Aoun and associates think they can benefit from them to gain political power. Not for long...

Which statistics you "disagree"with? That 50% of the Lebanese people support March8? Or that March 8 commands 45% of the Lebanese parliament not including the 12 MP's "given" to Junblat by the Shiaa in Aley/Baabda districts. These are not facts? You do need education in the Lebanese politics which i am doing for free daily.

Sarine: if you call yourself oppressed what do you call the palestinian refugees? give us a break from your empty whining MA: Which planet are you from? "The declaration" was made by Saniora and his illegal cabinet in making HA's private network illegal and prosecutable. The winograd com. id 2 main causes for israel's failure: HA's telco and of course their arms. Israel could destroy neither militarily so it now tries to do it internally via Saniora. Saniora, Ramsey and you "love" Lebanon just like Lahd and Haddad. Your claims of HA burning TV stations and killing "innocent civililians" are all sensationalised lies with all the stench associated with zionist propaganda. Is Resisting Israel alikened to a Business/Corp? What are you talking about?

CEO, the “ideology and doctrine” you speak of are just an enticing cover up and an over-sophistication of a much more trivial issue. Look for the money trail. No one rejoices in the death of their child. Everyday, we see successful businessmen hand their companies to others not necessarily their next of kin or even children for the business to continue to prosper and grow. These cut-throat decisions are made by people who want to advance the corporation interest above all other issues such as people’s lives and lively-hood. People then become dispensable. We are all now dispensable in the worst manner possible. That’s a scary neighbourhood of “businesses” we live in and Lebanon is right in the middle of it.

OmarS, I'm very interested in knowing how and when the government of Lebanon declared war on HA. Where is the war declaration? Does it start with the words; “We the government of Lebanon declare war on HA…?” Can you provide us with the war declaration text please as proof of your claim. I certainly have not seen such a declaration anywhere so can you please at least tell us where it is? How does a non-existent war declaration compel ha to attack the mountains and Beirut innocent civilians and burn down free tv stations? Did the tv station declare wart too? I read Ramsey’s comment and did not see any mention of Lahd, Haddad and Akel Hashem? What line was it on? Do you have a different access to Ramsey’s comments than we do?

A "wise" man not too long ago said "we need neither a consensus nor an apprival of anyone to continued our armed ressitance" and in the same breath he talked about his "allgiance to the party of Guirdianship of the Juris". A couple of days later another vice "wise" man said "(islamic) resitance is a vision an ideology and a way of life that will remain". I would like to say to the two wise men: resistance is the outcome of oppression and today, I feel I am oppressed with your politics as well as weapons that you used against me. I, also, can and will resist not with weapons, I will stay silent when the EU categorizes you as a terrorist organization, I will boycot your entities, I will vote against you and your allied and I will applaude any party who calls for your disramement and I will write articles and be vocally make it clear to everyone that I disagree with your vision and strategy....and I am sure the wise men at Hezballa will realize that I also do not need their consensus or
