Press conference on the agreement between the majority and the opposition
May 21, 2008
Qatari Prime Minister Hamad Ben Jassim Al-Thani: The agreement calls first on Speaker Nabih Berri to call on the parliament to convene in the coming 24 hours to elect General Michel Sleiman. Second, for the establishment of a national-unity government that includes 16 seats for the majority, 11 for the minority and three for the president. Third, it calls for the adoption of the 1960 electoral law and the division of Beirut into three electoral districts.

Thani: The agreement also calls for the commitment of all parties not to resort to violence and to strengthen the power of the state to ensure its security and that of the Lebanese people.

Thani: The agreement also calls for re-launching the dialogue under the management of the Lebanese president and ending the use of the language of sectarianism.

Speaker Nabih Berri at the final meeting of the Doha Conference: 10,452 km2 were not enough to bring us together, but a Qatari plane managed to do so.

Berri: The opposition’s sit-in will be removed from downtown as of today.

Prime Minister Fouad Siniora at the final meeting of the Doha Conference: We want Arab states to help us redress Lebanon’s relations with sister Syria.

PM Siniora: The agreement we reached is an exceptional agreement amid exceptional circumstances for an exceptional phase.

PM Sinora: We have to vow not to resort to weapons and to start accepting each other.

PM Siniora: This dialogue is the first step toward building the state.

PM Siniora: We have to constantly reiterate our commitment to the constitution. All of us must participate in the building of the state. It is not acceptable or permissible for any of us to resign from his responsibility in the building of the state or for any of us to stay on the side, waiting for the state to be weakened and then rushing in to help it.

PM Siniora: We want to live together and build the state together, and we have no other choice.

PM Siniora: I want to mourn the martyrs who fell in the wrong place during the latest events. We have no future except through our internal unity, which will help us achieve victory over Israel and preserve Lebanon.

Qatari Prince Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani: The meeting in Doha was successful because all parties acted courageously and responsibly. We have worked and dialogued together, and were aware that there is only one solution that can drive Lebanon out of the bloody conflict.
