Free Patriotic Movement leader General Michel Aoun in live press conference.
May 8, 2008
General Aoun: Canceling out the Hezbollah communication network… exposes the resistance.
Aoun: I would like to reiterate what Sayyed Nasrallah said: the divide today is political, between the pro-government and opposition forces. We must not hasten into igniting civil strife, then, for the divide is political.
Aoun: I do not agree with Hariri that the sedition is Sunni-Shia; instead it was caused by the government, which is responsible for everything that has happened. The government has been evading understanding for the past two years.
Aoun: I place all blame today on the government.  Clashes will not be Sunni-Shia, and I call for an end to every decision the government has begun to implement and call all parties to negotiation.
Aoun: It is not just the airport road that cuts off communication and the economy.
Aoun: The fate of the government’s obstinacy is what we see in the streets of Beirut today. The government must revoke its decisions.
Aoun: The government has made a big mistake, as it threatens the safety of the Lebanese and the resistance… The government wants to uncover the locations of resistance leadership.
Aoun: The army is doing what it can do. It cannot be partisan; killing a citizen is the worst thing it can do right now… In the clashes, the army cannot fulfill the duties of battle.
Aoun: It seems there is an internal-foreign conspiracy against the resistance.
Aoun: As we said two years ago, no one should be seduced by foreign support.
