Tension between UNIFIL and Israel in South Lebanon
February 6, 2008

The Lebanese National News Agency said that Israeli troops intercepted a Spanish UNIFIL contingent in South Lebanon while it was building a fence on the Lebanese side of the Al-Ghajar village and the road leading to it.

The Israelis also prevented the Spanish soldiers from undertaking the same measure in another location in the village and threatened to open fire on them.

Spanish soldiers took defensive positions with clear orders to retaliate in self defense if the Israelis opened fire.

The UNIFIL command was informed of this incident and contacted the Israelis to ask them to stop provocative actions against its troops and against Lebanese citizens.

The UNIFIL command dispatched five French Le Clerc tanks, several M133 and BTR soldier carriers, and more than seventy soldiers to the area’s surroundings.
