Former MP Nasser Qandil: An American-Syrian compromise was behind Sleiman’s candidacy
December 5, 2007

Wednesday, December 5

Former MP Nasser Qandil said it is clear that a Syrian-American compromise resulted in the candidacy of Army Commander General Michel Sleiman.

“If MP Saad Hariri had agreed on Sleiman’s candidacy, would he have left MP Ammar Houri to announce it?” Qandil asked. “They wanted to sabotage his candidacy,” he added.

He also declared that Syria will return to Lebanon, whether on the military or security level. “This is a Syrian decision,” Qandil said.

“Everyone is talking about the importance of the Syrian role in the region and the need to engage in dialogue with Damascus,” Qandil said.

“Iran was welcomed to the summit of the UAE Cooperation Council after international efforts were made to isolate it,” he added.

He also called on the Patriarch to reveal the identity of those who manipulated and cheated him and those responsible for obstructing the elections.

“We call on Bkirki to benefit from its past experience and take lessons, for we need it as a national reference, not an institution that takes sides,” he added.

Qandil also said that the March 14 coalition has become a “has been.”

He declared that an agreement over the coming prime minister is the solution to the current impasse. “The agreement over the next PM, in addition to one on Sleiman, is more than half of the compromise the opposition is seeking,” he said.
