Williams says Arab visits beneficial for Lebanon
July 30, 2010

Following his meeting with Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on Friday, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams issued a statement that he believed Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s visit to Lebanon would be of high importance and beneficial for the country’s stability and future.

The Arab leaders are expected to arrive in Beirut Friday afternoon to meet with President Michel Sleiman at the Presidential Palace in Baabda.

In relation to the Palestinian implementation in Lebanon, Williams said, “I know there are some difficulties and sensitivities, but I believe everybody is now approaching this in a constructive and positive manner, looking for advances with regard to the right of work for Palestinians.”

When asked about his current views concerning the Special Tribunal of Lebanon (STL), he refused to comment until the issue was to be resolved, expressing his concern about some of the tension that has already taken place following Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s statement last week that the STL is an Israeli project targeting the Resistance.
