Deputy UNIFIL head thanks LAF, residents for partnership in South
July 29, 2010

Deputy Force Commander and Deputy Head of Mission of the UNIFIL Santi Bonfanti thanked the Lebanese army, officials and residents in South Lebanon for their cooperation with the peacekeeping force, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

He made the remark during a ceremony hosted by UNIFIL’s Nepalese troops in the town of Mays al-Jabal.

In late June and early July, the South of Lebanon was marked by a string of protests by residents against UNIFIL troops, which was sparked during a maximum deployment exercise. Following the incident, the peacekeeping force request more Lebanese army troops be deployed to the area. Contingents from the army’s 5th Brigade were sent to the South this week to bolster the force.
