Economy Minister Mohammad Safadi broke his alliance with the Future Movement shortly after the Minieh-Donniyeh parliamentary by-elections in June, according to a source quoted in Thursday’s As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper.
The race was held to fill the seat left vacant by the April death of Lebanon First bloc MP Hashem Alameddine. Future Movement candidate Kazem al-Kheir was voted in his place.
The source also said Safadi met with Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun on Tuesday to ensure the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) does not become a source of tension for the Lebanese.
He also echoed Safadi’s remark to the press that Aoun can play a central role in uniting the Lebanese, which came as a surprise to the Future Movement, according to one of its sources.
