Marouni inquires into Jumblatt’s expected trip to Syria
March 16, 2010

In an interview with Future News on Tuesday, Kataeb bloc MP Elie Marouni inquired about the national benefit from Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt’s expected Damascus visit, which, according to An-Nahar newspaper, will take place before March 25.

This comes after Jumblatt’s Saturday interview with Al-Jazeera during which he had previously “in a moment of anger and loss” made inappropriate comments about Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Marouni said that it is up to the Lebanese state “to turn a new page with Damascus,” adding, “Our problem with Syria is that it wants to deal with each party separately.”

Lebanon and Syria should have a clean slate, he said. However, he added that Damascus harmed the Kataeb Party.

Marouni said Syria “should help us forget the past and launch the process of trust building.”

Marouni touched on the campaign launched against the Internal Security Force (ISF) for signing the 2007 US-Lebanese agreement for military cooperation, saying that it intends to destroy the ISF.

He said the ISF is one of the few institutions fulfilling its duties despite being understaffed and the lack of equipment.
