Saad: Jumblatt’s Al-Jazeera interview was not an apology to Syria
March 14, 2010

In an exclusive interview with NOW Lebanon published on Sunday, Democratic Gathering bloc MP Fouad Saad said that his bloc leader MP Walid Jumblatt did not apologize to Syria in his Saturday interview with Al-Jazeera television.

Jumblatt admitted during the interview that he’d previously made some inappropriate comments about Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “in a moment of anger and loss.” He also suggested the two men turn a new page.

“[Jumblatt’s] statement was calm, positive, rational and was not humiliating to him,” Saad said.

The MP denied reports that Jumblatt instructed members of his bloc on whether to participate in the March 14 alliance’s meeting at the Bristol Hotel on Sunday.

Speaking for himself, Saad said that he remains a part of the alliance and his bloc at the same time. Jumblatt split from the March 14 alliance last year.

Meetings with Jumblatt are ongoing, Saad said, adding that he “will not abandon Jumblatt under any circumstances.”

“We will work together [with Jumblatt] under centrality and balance, and through our cooperation with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir,” Saad said.
