Houri: Campaign on US- ISF agreement targets STL
March 12, 2010

The campaign against the agreement signed between the US and the Internal Security Forces (ISF) targets the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), said Lebanon First bloc MP Ammar Houri in an interview with Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai published on Friday.

Seeking to undermine the ISF’s credibility is an attempt to delegitimize the STL’s outcome, he added.

This comes after reports on a supposed security agreement between the US and the ISF following a US request for information on Lebanon’s communications grid. March 8 coalition figures criticized former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s cabinet for approving to sign the agreement.

Houri commented on Siniora’s request to remove what is known as the Resistance clause – that Lebanon has the right to defend itself through its army, people and Resistance – from the national dialogue’s final statement. The goal is to maintain the statement’s credibility, because no one mentioned the issue during the opening national dialogue session, he said.

Houri also touched on Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s visit to Damascus next month, saying it comes as part of the efforts to improve Lebanese-Syrian relations. He quoted the PM as saying that his request that ministers provide feedback on the Lebanese-Syrian agreements is so that they can be used to re-evaluate the accords.
