Lebanese man becomes first to sue former Syrian jailers
March 11, 2010

Elias Tanios filed an lawsuit against the five Syrians that allegedly kidnapped, tortured and jailed him in Syria, his lawyer, Sleiman Labbous, told AFP on Thursday.

Tanios—a former member of the Internal Security Forces (ISF)—was kidnapped from Lebanon by Syrian soldiers in 1992 and taken to Syria where he was held in jail until his release in 2000, he said.

"Two days ago he filed a suit in a Beirut court against four Syrian officers responsible for his detention and his torture during his years in jail," Labbous said.

Tanios also filed a suit against a Syrian man, who also holds Lebanese nationality, for allegedly denouncing him, Labbous added.

The suit is the first of its kind to be filed against Syrian authorities by a Lebanese national once held in Syria.
