Al-Watan says Jumblatt should be concerned with dignity of Syrians, not Druze
March 10, 2010

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt should be concerned with the dignity of the Syrian people rather than that of the Druze community, reported Syrian newspaper Al-Watan on Wednesday.

This comes after Jumblatt’s interview with Al-Akhbar in February, when he said that if Syria seeks the Druze community’s support, it should respect the dignity of the sect that he represents.

“Syrian foreign policy is based on supporting the Resistance,” said the daily, adding, “If Jumblatt sees himself in this context, then he is halfway to [Damascus].”

However, according to the daily, Jumblatt is still confused about his relationship with the Syrian leadership.

Al-Watan also said that UN Security Council Resolution 1559 – which Jumblatt said was a result of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s decision to extend former Lebanese President Emile Lahoud’s term in 2005 – “was a US-French conspiracy against Syria, Lebanon and the Resistance to facilitate the election of a Lebanese president who supports Israel’s aspirations.”

Jumblatt’s visit was only made possible after Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah agreed to mediate between the PSP leader and Assad, said the daily.

“Damascus  tells Jumblatt that it will not forget his past offenses,” said Al-Watan, in a reference to “Jumblatt’s instigation against Syrian nationals in Lebanon, his call for Syria’s invasion and his attempts to mislead the investigation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).”

However, the daily added that while Syria is open to Jumblatt’s visit, it would be a part of a reconciliation, rather than establishing close ties with Lebanese sect leaders.
