The US Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill warned on Tuesday against "slippage" in holding Iraq’s general election – scheduled to take place in January – which has been threatened with delays due to a stalled electoral law.
Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, meanwhile, who vetoed the law passed by lawmakers earlier this month, hinted that he would also oppose an amended version agreed on Monday.
"Some slippage would be ok, but we don't want a lot of slippage, so I hope they'll look very carefully at this and I hope we can get moving," Hill told reporters at the National Museum in Baghdad.
"I think what is most important is we get these elections going and get on with this process," he said, without elaborating on what would constitute too long a delay.
