Getting ready for war?
Ana Maria Luca , November 6, 2009
A rocket from the Francop ship displayed for the media at the port of Ashdod (DAVID BUIMOVITCH, AFP)

Name: Francop. Expedient: Iran. Destination: Hezbollah, through Syria.  Quantity: thousands of medium-range 107- and 122-millimeter rockets, armor-piercing artillery, hand grenades and ammunition for Kalashnikov rifles.

On Wednesday morning Israeli Defense Forces seized a ship carrying 500 tons of weapons on its way to Cyprus. Apparently, they were alerted to the ship by Unites States, which also asked them not to bomb it. The IDF then escorted the ship to Ashdod harbor in Israel and a couple of hours later revealed its contents to the Israeli and international media.

Diplomatic sources are now wondering if this is the pretext that will launch the next war on Lebanon.

The move came a day after UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon announced conclusions of the 11th report on implementing UNSCR 1701, which said that Hezbollah’s continuing to arm is worrying, although there is no proof of arms smuggling to Lebanon.

A few hours later, however, the Israelis provided all the proof they deemed necessary. They displayed the missiles from the Francop in the harbor, organized a media tour, allowed all international press agencies to photograph them and, for good measure, the IDF released a movie of the capture for the entire world to see.

Who’s going to listen to Hezbollah?

Very few people, now. It took a day for Hezbollah to release a statement denying “any link to the weapons that the Zionist enemy claims it removed from the vessel Francop.”

In terms of making the case for war, it would seem the Jewish state has gained the upper hand over the Party of God in recent months, with the discovery of an assassination plot against the head of the IDF,  several rocket attacks from Lebanon, the explosions of arms storage facilities, official complaints filed to the United Nations. Hezbollah has fought back with a few press releases.

After Wednesday’s incident, Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a document to Israeli embassies and consulates around the world, instructing employees to utilize Israel's seizure of the ship to increase international pressure on Iran. Israeli diplomats were instructed to stress Iran's violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions forbidding it from supplying weapons to Syria or Hezbollah.

Talk of war

Diplomatic sources in Lebanon say they are already discussing the possibility of a new conflict in South Lebanon, and reports in the media have said that the United States prevented IDF from actually bombing the ship. According to Arabic press reports, in a trilateral meeting between the United States, Israel and France, Israeli officials stated that hitting Hezbollah would be easier than attacking Iran directly and that the best time to launch such an offensive would be spring 2010.

“The situation in South Lebanon is not at all finished and is more and more tense. There is going to be new fighting soon. Israel has been waiting at any moment for Hezbollah to be asked by Iran to do something: kidnap two soldiers or shoot down a plane,” a diplomat close to UNIFIL told NOW.

The UN’s 30-year-old peacekeeping operation in South Lebanon is going through a crisis too, as rising tensions between Hezbollah, Iran, Syria and Israel are causing a diplomatic spat between Italy and Spain. UNIFIL is currently led by the Italian contingent, though General Claudio Graziano’s mandate will expire in February 2010. The Spanish contingent is scheduled to lead UNIFIL next, but the Israeli government has lobbied the Italians to stay on at UNIFIL’s helm. Israel perceives Spain as being closer and more friendly to Hezbollah than Italy. Amid the diplomatic squabbling, more countries announced they are reducing their troop numbers  in Lebanon. Italy recently said it was withdrawing half of its troops at the beginning of 2010. Germany is also set to gradually withdraw its fleet.

“UNIFIL cannot stop the armament of Hezbollah. It is a proven thing. It is a peacekeeping operation. It cannot interfere in the conflict. I think that UN will stay out of the conflict once it breaks out and will stick to the humanitarian job,” the diplomat told NOW.

Sami, you dance and I tell you, your dance is awful.Lebanon is a democracy and it supports me and really that's all I care for. Our democracy allows us to converse on this internet and website. Can you do the same in the other countries that support you? Would you dare voice a dissident concern in those hell holes? Let me answer for you, the answer is simple and it is no to both questions. Come on now, who's dancing and falling all over themselves and all over place? iran and syria,. Who are constantly in trouble with the international community? Let's guess, iran and syria and north korea, and the list of questions goes on and on and on, with the same two or three states popping up every time....you still, wonder why? .

Wow Marco how you dance around the subject. You ignored the question and reverted to human rights issue and we were talking about democracy.Saudi Arabia still beheads men and stones women.Does not allow women to drive a vehicle and orders them to cover their faces. It denies non Muslims the right to worship. I did not ask if the governments were less "transparent".Democracy, habibi, thats the question.Again, name one Arabic country that supports you that is democratic.

Iran, is another of the few of your clan and syria supporters. Yes, according to the annual survey of perceived (more like obvious) levels of corruption, Iran is the world's 9th most corrupt state on earth behind bright lights like sumalia, chad, afghanistan and iraq. These are your supporters, saudi arabia and others including our government are not on the same page when it comes to the above list of "distinguished" states of horror. These are the states for whom you sing daily praises on this website. You see the fruits of their labor in front of your very eyes then you deny it. Few governments are transparent but these states take the cake when it comes to corruption and lack of human rights. The fact that you and I can converse on this website is testimony to the rights we have. syria kingdom or iran religious state not an excuse for being tyrannies.

Marco, name one Arabic country that is democratic including those that support your lot in its war on HA.At least I admit that the Syrian regime is undemocratic,I even said it became a kingdom. But will you admit that the regime that support your lot are not democratic?Saudi Arabia does not allow a church in Saudi Arabia yet it floods your lot with funds to win the elections.Strange logic.

Yeah, Shirin sami is always right, just look a little to the east. You'll find syria is the true and real democracy and so is iran. just look at the syrian system of government, all is in great shape there, they have a 100% western-style fully functional "democracy" light years ahead of anyone else in the middle east. They are a model to go by, sami feels sorry they had to go, he'd rather live in his .....under their occupation ,,,,,,all day long.

Shirin, you seem to forget harb al mukhayamat, where Amal attacked and fought Arafat's lot in the palestinian camps. The civil war in '75 was not between Muslims and Christians;evidence:All the leaders of the left(pro "Muslims" )were Christians such as George Hawi,George Shawi,Nayef Hawatmeh,George Habash,Inaam Raad. Some leaders of the right were Muslims such as Kazem Al Khaleel(an MP from Tyre)etc. This war was between the left and the right wings. Lebanon is not a democracy,it is ruled by feudal lords with loyalties to their sects. All positions in Lebanon are "allocated" according to sect not according to qualifications thus making democracy just a slogan.

...And what does Lebanon want from Israel in return? Two things.Dont attack us and do not steal our land and kidnap our people. Here is a proposition to Israel 1-Give us back our land including the 7 villages.2-Free our Lebanese citizens still in Israeli prisons.3-Stop flying over our heads.4-Stop entering our land and sea daily.5-Stop spying on us.6-Take back all the Palestinians you exported to us in '48.We will make peace with Israel once this is done, even if Iran still has a problem with Israel...

- The evidance that eliminates this Israeli play is that the Lebanese Army Inlellegience hadinvestigated wuth the ship crew and denied any attempt to pass rockets to Hizbollah. Every body knows that Hizbollah is getting armied toprepare for any attackfrom Isreali side. So we a made a big story behind this ship and Hizbollah is not that stupid to bypass rockets that "clear" and make himslef in the spot of the "guilty"".Hizboallah has 100 of other ways to arm himeslef and none knows..... Hizbollah say it in the open mouth Ïam arming myself" so he isshowing the world that he is not scared of doing so. Soyes, we ae ready for War ANYTIME !!!

sami you seem to forget taht in 75 muslims stood with palestinians agains christians, in all cases, the truth remains that the arms of HA now are weakening the soi-disant democracy in lebanon and the whole world can think HA was victorious in 06 but only those who lived the consequences of this ravaging war know that Lebanon and lebanese were NOT victorious. our children killed, our infrastructure destroyed and Lebanon 20 years backward, there is no win win in war situation, wars are primitive and destructive, we are in the 21st century!! HA is an ally of the enemies of lebanon. and that is the ONLY truth we all know of. except you! Love lebanon above everything else we should all do that and whether shi3a or marouni love each other and then lebanon will be fine and then we can say we are victorious,
