Nassib Lahoud is dead. His death is the end note of a major political death that had been creeping up slowly since the day after the success of the Independence Intifada, in which he played a major role.

If one thing could be said of Nassib Lahoud, who passed away on Thursday after a long battle with cancer, it’s that the fact he was viewed as a natural choice to become Lebanon’s president virtually guaranteed his never being elected to the office.

Simply a decent man
Nassib Lahoud, who died early on Thursday at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer, was always held up as a “clean” man and was genuinely respected by Lebanese of all sects. His presidential aspirations were perhaps thwarted because of that very quality.
